Usi
(Tamil for needle) in Bharatanatyam dance is an offbeat rhythmic shift—unexpected, syncopated, and precise. Typically used to create contrast and maintain rhythmic complexity, it interrupts the expected flow, offering anticipation. This performance stretches Usi beyond a fleeting moment into an extended 20-minute duration, suspending resolution. The body marks time, through one repeated gesture–feet striking the floor, gaze rising and falling, a promise of an arrival.

Drawing on Anurima Banerji’s ‘paratopia,’ this work experiments with the body as a temporal needle threading ‘alongside’ established narrative of expectation by opening ‘another’ dimension with repetition, abstraction and duration.
